Cornice
The cornice, derived from the Italian word for “ledge,” caps off the entablature. In the Doric Order, the cornice typically consisted of three parts: the cyma, the corona and the bed molding. The cyma, or wave molding, is the double curved uppermost part of the cornice. Below that is the corona, which has a vertical face and a horizontal soffit, or underside. The bed molding sits at the bottom, under the projecting part of the cornice. As with other aspects of Doric architecture, the cornice adapted carpentry forms from wooden buildings.
